You Are Not Alone in Your Journey
If you live with the weight of past trauma, you know it is rarely just a “memory.” It can manifest as a physical sensation in your chest during a loud noise, a sudden flash of a moment you’d rather forget, or the exhaustion of living in a constant state of high alert. If you feel your past is preventing you from living in the present, know this: You are not alone, and healing is possible.
At Anxiety Trauma & Depression Treatment Centers, we meet people daily who feel “stuck.” Whether you are navigating the aftermath of a single traumatic event or the long-term effects of complex PTSD, there is a way forward. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) therapy is one of the most powerful tools we use to help our clients find their way back to themselves.
As part of our commitment to providing compassionate, expert care across Utah, we integrate EMDR into comprehensive treatment plans to help you move from surviving to thriving.

What is EMDR Therapy?
At first glance, EMDR can seem a bit mysterious. Unlike traditional talk therapy, which primarily focuses on discussing an event and your feelings about it, EMDR focuses on how your brain processes the memory.

Think of your brain as a high-tech filing system. When something “normal” happens, your brain processes the information and files it away in long-term memory. But when something traumatic occurs, this “filing system” can become overwhelmed. The memory may become “blocked” or “frozen” in its raw, emotional form. This is why, years later, a certain smell or sound can make you feel as though the trauma is happening all over again.
EMDR uses “bilateral stimulation”–typically led by a therapist guiding your eyes back and forth–to help unlock those frozen memories. This stimulation mimics the natural processing that occurs during REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep. By engaging both sides of the brain, EMDR allows you to reprocess the trauma so it can finally be filed away as a neutral “past event” rather than a “present threat.”

The Science of Healing: How Effective is EMDR?
You might wonder, “Does moving my eyes really change how I feel?” The answer, backed by decades of clinical research, is a resounding yes.
EMDR is not just an alternative therapy; it is a gold-standard treatment recognized by the World Health Organization (WHO), the American Psychiatric Association, and the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). Extensive studies have shown that EMDR can lead to significant reductions in PTSD symptoms in a fraction of the time it might take for talk therapy alone.
The transformative power of bilateral stimulation lies in its ability to decrease the “emotional charge” of a memory. Success stories often highlight that while the person still remembers what happened, they no longer feel the visceral panic or debilitating shame previously associated with it. The body can finally feel safe again.

Integrating EMDR into a Comprehensive Care Plan
While EMDR is powerful on its own, we believe it works best when supported by a sturdy foundation. At Anxiety Trauma & Depression Treatment Centers, we offer a roadmap to recovery through our proprietary Resilience Model.

The Role of Intensive Outpatient Programs (IOP)
For many, once-a-week therapy isn’t enough to break the cycle of severe trauma or depression. This is where our IOP Treatment (Intensive Outpatient Program) becomes vital. Our IOP provides 9-13 hours of structured weekly care, allowing for a deeper dive into healing while you still live at home.
By integrating EMDR into our IOP Treatment, we can offer a higher level of support. Clients can process trauma in EMDR sessions and then immediately practice grounding and regulation skills within the safety of the group and individual IOP setting.
Preparing for the Work
EMDR can be intense. That’s why we take a “skills-first” approach. Before diving into the deep processing of traumatic memories, we use elements of Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) to help you build a “toolbox” of coping skills. We ensure your mind and body are prepared to handle the emotional work of EMDR with confidence.
Who Can Benefit from EMDR?
Trauma does not discriminate, and neither does our care. We work with individuals across the lifespan, from children as young as 10 to adults up to age 75.
* Adolescents and Young Adults: Addressing school stress, bullying, or early childhood trauma.
* Adults: Dealing with career burnout, relationship trauma, or long-standing depression.
* Veterans and First Responders: Addressing service-related PTSD, moral injury, service-connected trauma, and the complex emotional challenges of transitioning to civilian life. As an in-network provider for TRICARE West and VA-CCN, we provide the military-informed care necessary to process these experiences and build lasting resilience.
* Rural Communities: We understand the unique stressors faced by our neighbors, such as Utah farmers. Our virtual programs ensure that even those in the most remote areas of the state can access world-class trauma care.
* Complex PTSD: For those who have experienced repeated, long-term trauma, EMDR offers a structured way to untangle complex emotional knots.

What to Expect During an EMDR Session

Transparency is a core part of our approach. We want you to feel empowered and informed. EMDR typically follows an eight-phase journey:
1. History Taking: Understanding your story and identifying target memories.
2. Preparation: Learning grounding techniques to help you stay calm during the process.
3. Assessment: Identifying the negative beliefs you hold about yourself (e.g., “I am not safe”).
4. Desensitization: The “eye movement” phase where the memory’s intensity is reduced.
5. Installation: Strengthening a new, positive belief (e.g., “I am safe now”).
6. Body Scan: Ensuring no physical tension remains.
7. Closure: Returning to a state of equilibrium.
8. Reevaluation: Checking progress at the start of the next session.
Throughout this process, our trauma-trained professionals create a safe, non-judgmental space. The therapeutic relationship is our top priority; we move at your pace, ensuring you feel heard and supported every step of the way.
